Acid Reflux Treatment

Proven Relief for Heartburn, Indigestion & GORD

Acid reflux, also known as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), occurs when stomach acid flows back up into the oesophagus, causing heartburn, chest discomfort, and indigestion. It can be occasional or chronic, and symptoms may worsen after eating, lying down, or at night.

At MediClick Pharmacy, we offer a range of effective prescription acid reflux treatments, designed to reduce excess stomach acid and prevent uncomfortable flare-ups. No GP appointment required.

What Is Acid Reflux?

Acid reflux happens when the valve between the stomach and oesophagus becomes weakened or relaxed, allowing acid to escape. If it occurs regularly, it may be diagnosed as GORD.

Who Can Use Acid Reflux Treatments?

Most adults aged 18+ can use PPIs following a brief consultation.

Speak to a prescriber if you:
  • Have frequent vomiting or severe chest pain
  • Experience unexplained weight loss or trouble swallowing
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Use other regular medications or have liver conditions

Symptoms of Acid Reflux

Acid reflux, also known as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), occurs when stomach acid flows back into the oesophagus. This can irritate the lining of the throat and cause a range of uncomfortable symptoms, particularly after eating or when lying down.

Common symptoms include:

  • Heartburn – a burning sensation in the chest or throat

  • Acidic or bitter taste in the mouth (regurgitation)

  • Bloating or feeling full quickly after eating

  • Frequent burping or hiccups

  • Sore throat, hoarseness, or a persistent cough

  • Worsening symptoms at night or when lying flat

Treatments like Omeprazole, Lansoprazole, and Pantoprazole help by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach, providing long-term relief from discomfort and helping the oesophagus to heal.

How to Take Acid Reflux Treatments

Acid reflux (also known as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, or GORD) is typically managed with proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) that work by reducing stomach acid production, helping relieve symptoms like heartburn, regurgitation, and indigestion.

  • Take the tablet or capsule once daily, ideally first thing in the morning.

  • Swallow whole with a glass of water — do not chew or crush.

  • Best taken on an empty stomach around 30–60 minutes before food.

  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it’s nearly time for your next dose.

Common Questions About Acid Reflux

What is acid reflux?

Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid flows back into the oesophagus (the tube connecting your mouth and stomach), causing a burning sensation known as heartburn. If it happens frequently, it may be diagnosed as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD).

Common symptoms include:

  • Burning pain or discomfort in the chest (heartburn)

  • Sour or bitter-tasting acid in the throat or mouth

  • Difficulty swallowing

  • Regurgitation of food or liquid

  • Chronic cough or hoarseness

Symptoms often worsen after eating, when lying down, or bending over.

Acid reflux can occur for various reasons, including:

  • Weakness of the lower oesophageal sphincter (valve)

  • Obesity or being overweight

  • Pregnancy

  • Eating large meals or lying down straight after eating

  • Smoking

  • Certain foods and drinks (e.g., spicy foods, coffee, alcohol)

MediClick Pharmacy offers effective treatments such as:

  • Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) like Omeprazole, Losec®, Lansoprazole, Nexium®, and Pantoprazole

These medications reduce the amount of acid produced in the stomach, relieving symptoms and promoting healing.

Lifestyle modifications, such as weight loss, avoiding trigger foods, and eating smaller meals, can also be very helpful.

Many people notice improvement in symptoms within a few days of starting treatment. Full healing of the oesophagus may take 4–8 weeks, depending on the severity of the condition.

Acid reflux can often be managed very successfully with medication and lifestyle changes. However, some people may need long-term or intermittent treatment if symptoms return.

PPIs are usually well tolerated. Possible side effects include:

  • Headache

  • Nausea or stomach upset

  • Diarrhoea or constipation

Long-term use should be monitored by a healthcare professional, as it may slightly increase the risk of certain conditions, such as vitamin B12 deficiency or bone thinning.
