Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) Treatment

Fast, Targeted Relief from BV Symptoms

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a common vaginal infection caused by an imbalance in the natural bacteria of the vagina. While not classed as a sexually transmitted infection (STI), BV can often be triggered or worsened by sexual activity and may return if left untreated.

At MediClick Pharmacy, we offer clinically proven prescription treatments to help clear the infection quickly and reduce the chance of recurrence — with discreet delivery and no GP appointment required.

What Is Bacterial Vaginosis?

BV occurs when there is a disruption in the normal balance of good and harmful bacteria in the vagina. This imbalance can cause an increase in vaginal pH, leading to symptoms such as:

  • Thin, grey or white discharge
  • Fishy or unpleasant odour, especially after sex
  • Vaginal irritation or discomfort

BV is not dangerous, but it can cause discomfort and may increase the risk of other infections if left untreated.

How Does It Work?

Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) treatments work by restoring the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina. Normally, healthy vaginal flora is dominated by lactobacilli, but when this balance shifts, overgrowth of other bacteria can cause BV. Prescription treatments like Metronidazole tablets or Zidoval® vaginal gel are antibiotics that target and reduce the excess bacteria, relieving symptoms and helping to prevent recurrence when used correctly.

Symptoms of Bacterial Vaginosis

Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) is a common vaginal infection caused by an imbalance in the natural bacteria found in the vagina. While some women may have no symptoms at all, others experience noticeable changes that are important to recognise.

Common symptoms include:

  • A thin, watery vaginal discharge, often grey or white in colour

  • A strong fishy odour, especially after sex

  • Mild vaginal itching or irritation

  • A slight burning sensation during urination (in some cases)

BV is not a sexually transmitted infection (STI), but sexual activity can trigger symptoms. If left untreated, it can increase the risk of other infections or complications during pregnancy. Treatment helps restore the natural bacterial balance and relieve symptoms quickly.

How to Take Bacterial Vaginosis Treatments

Oral Tablets (Metronidazole):
  • Swallow the tablet whole with water.
  • Take exactly as prescribed, usually twice daily for 5–7 days.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking metronidazole or for 48 hours after finishing the course — this may cause unpleasant side effects.
Vaginal Gel (Zidoval):
  • Use the provided applicator to insert the gel into the vagina, usually once daily at bedtime for 5 consecutive days.
  • Wash hands before and after use.
  • Avoid vaginal douching or using other internal products during the course of treatment.

Common Questions About Bacterial Vaginosis

What is bacterial vaginosis (BV)?

Bacterial vaginosis is a common vaginal condition caused by an imbalance of the natural bacteria found in the vagina. It is not a sexually transmitted infection, but sexual activity can sometimes trigger or worsen symptoms.

Common symptoms include:

  • A thin, greyish-white vaginal discharge

  • A strong, fishy odour, particularly after sex

  • Mild vaginal irritation or discomfort

Many women with BV may not experience any noticeable symptoms.

BV occurs when the normal balance of good bacteria (lactobacilli) in the vagina is disrupted, allowing harmful bacteria to grow. Factors that can increase the risk include:

  • Frequent douching or use of perfumed products

  • New or multiple sexual partners

  • Smoking

  • Using an intrauterine device (IUD)

BV is treated with antibiotics, either:

  • Metronidazole tablets taken orally, or

  • Zidoval® vaginal gel applied directly into the vagina.

Both treatments are highly effective when taken as directed.

In some mild cases, BV can clear on its own. However, treatment is recommended to avoid complications, particularly for pregnant women or those undergoing gynaecological procedures.

BV is not considered a sexually transmitted infection (STI), but sexual activity can upset the balance of bacteria in the vagina. Male partners typically do not require treatment, but female partners may be at risk and should be tested if symptoms develop.

Possible side effects include:

  • Nausea or upset stomach (with metronidazole tablets)

  • Vaginal irritation or dryness (with Zidoval gel)

  • Metallic taste in the mouth (with metronidazole)

If you experience severe side effects or an allergic reaction, contact a healthcare professional immediately.

Dosage Information

Your exact dosage will be determined during the consultation based on your medical history and preference of treatment form.

Metronidazole Tablets:
  • 400mg twice daily for 5–7 days
  • Take with or after food to reduce stomach upset
  • Always complete the full course, even if symptoms improve
Zidoval Vaginal Gel (0.75%):
  • One full applicator (5g) inserted into the vagina once daily
  • Best applied at night before bed for 5 days
  • Do not miss doses — continue the course for full effectiveness

Possible Side Effects of Bacterial Vaginosis Treatments

Most women tolerate metronidazole (oral tablets or vaginal gel) well, but some may experience side effects. These are generally mild and temporary.

Common Side Effects

(may affect more than 1 in 10 people):

Nausea or upset stomach / Metallic taste in the mouth / Loss of appetite / Headache / Vaginal irritation (with gel)

Uncommon Side Effects

(may affect up to 1 in 100 people):

Diarrhoea or constipation / Dry mouth / Dizziness or drowsiness / Skin rash or itching

Important notes:
  • Avoid alcohol while taking metronidazole and for at least 48 hours after the last dose to prevent serious reactions (e.g. nausea, flushing, rapid heartbeat).
  • If you experience signs of an allergic reaction — such as swelling, difficulty breathing, or a severe rash — stop taking the medicine and seek urgent medical attention.
